Dr. Sauter ist der einzige öffentlich bestellte und vereidigte Sachverständige der IHK (Industrie- und Handelskammer) für die Beurteilung musikalischer Fragen (bestellt von der IHK für München und Oberbayern).
Das Tätigkeitsfeld als Sachverständiger umfasst u. a.:

- Beurteilung der Marktüblichkeit streitiger Vorgänge im Musikbusiness
- Begutachtung von Plagiatsvorwürfen
- Prüfung der Schutzfähigkeit von Jingles
- Beratung bei Buchprüfungen im Lizenzierungsgeschäft zwischen Unternehmen
Dr. Sauter is the only publicly appointed and sworn expert of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the appraisal of musical issues. As an expert in his field, the scope of his activities includes, among others:
- Preliminary investigations into sound alikes
- Inquiring into and identifying the rights owners of musical works
- Assessment of the extent to which controversial proceedings in the music business are customary practice
- Examination of charges of plagiarism
- Investigation and evaluation of the protectability of jingles
- Consultancy on the auditing of accounts in B-to-B licensing transactions
